Accordingly, they ran another diagnostic which showed that it was not a design flaw, as it had been suggested to me, but a sensor problem, and they needed to replace the engine speed sensor and 2 crankshaft position sensors. driver side front foot panel loose. Found mounting tabs on part broken and clips missing. Replaced sill molding and broken clips.

It was slight when purchased (104,000 miles) and progressed until unbearable (108,000 miles). Since the blower is tucked way up inside the dash, removal and replacement is time-consuming and costly, with shop estimates from $1000 to $1500. I removed the front cowl, and using a flashlight, mirror, and long piece of small diameter tubing (you can use something else I'm sure), I put TriFlow lubricant into the end of the tubing and snaked it in to the front motor bearing (could see that the shaft was a little rusty). I could only put one drop on the bearing at a time, but the bearing was totally silent for almost a year (including freezing winter temps) and is just beginning to occasionally make a little noise. I'll do it again and use more lubricant this time. If you're a DIYer (or if you can get your mechanic to do this), this method saves a lot of time and money.
