The fuel is drawn out of the tank by the injection pump which places the entire fuel line in a vacuum rather than under pressure. If any leaks exist within the fuel line, the engine will start, suck air, and stall. The filter head must then be primed using the pump/bleed procedure before the vehicle will start again. Sasquatch Parts makes a retrofit kit that allows you to install a lift pump in the tank (complete with necessary wiring harness).

Related to radiator issue—leak in hose from radiator meant air in heating system, so no heat in car (weather outside was below zero at this time). Required new hoses. Front brake pads worn down much more than thought, almost to metal on metal. needed new pads and rotor replacement.
