A member from Virginia, United States Best Reason to Buy the Volkswagen Touareg: Fuel economy Diesel makes the extra weight of an SUV tolerable. In 4 months of use I've been getting high teens around town and 29 cruising on the highway at 70-75. Slowing down to 60-65 puts mpg just over 30. Best Reason Not to Buy the Volkswagen Touareg: Feature availability Several options typical of the Touareg's price category are not available in North America, even though buyers in the rest of the world can get them: blind spot detection, lane departure warning, voice control (except for phone), smart cruise control. Withholding these options (apparently to keep the final price down) is silly marketing. I cross-shopped the Touareg against comparable Audi, BMW, and Mercedes models, all of which offered options I wanted and was willing to pay for. VW should embrace the price category to which the Touareg belongs. Compare to other mid-size SUV's A member from Illinois, United States Best Reason to Buy the Volkswagen Touareg: Exterior styling The VW Touareg (this is in its 3rd generation now, since 2011, review is for the latest VR6 Sport w/navi model) serves as the basis for much more expensive SUV's (Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne) as they all start out in the same plant in Bratislavia so they have the same basic styling which looks aggressive but not gaudy. The car has great proportions but is not too large to fit in most garages and is an 'in-between' bigger than compact SUV's but not as big as full-size ones; we like the minor chrome pieces and understated design. Best Reason Not to Buy the Volkswagen Touareg: Insurance & depreciation insurance was not bad but not sure on depreciation, we did get a very good purchase price versus full MSRP (actually under dealer invoice) so we'll see how it does down the road. Dishonesty - I bought my V8 from a dealer who sold me the vehicle with 2 faulty keys and refused to pay to reprogram them. Straight seams and panels. No squeaks Best Reason Not to Buy the Volkswagen Touareg: Fuel economy This car gets 14.7 city and 17.5 HWY. On Premium Fuel. But we pay the price for the speed, comfort, and security of the Touareg. A member from Virginia, United States Best Reason to Buy the Volkswagen Touareg: Audio & nav systems This system in modern and highly functional. No complaints. The base audio system is great and there is no need to upgrade. The new nav is very user friendly and comes witha 40 GB hard drive. Best Reason Not to Buy the Volkswagen Touareg: Color choices The color combinations are not that good. No basic balck leather but rather an off gray. If one opts for the tan leather, then the dash board / steering wheel is an off brown (should be black for contrast in my opinion). Paint quality is not that good. The leather is best quality I have ever seen ... rugged, but still soft. The ergonomic engineering is like those people were inside my mind! Best Reason Not to Buy the Volkswagen Touareg: Dealership practices Horrible! HORRIBLE! Buy direct or from a private party if you can. This came from a dealership I felt so slimy and dirty after the experience I had to take a shower. Maybe just this dealer but stay away from Parktown Porsche Audi in St. Louis, Missouri.
