Volkswagen Jetta Reliability through December 31, 2012
General NotesModels and statistics marked with an asterisk (*) have very low sample sizes. These results, visible only to logged-in members, provide only a rough estimate of car reliability.Any result under 20 repair trips per 100 cars is likely a result of the small sample size, and should be expected to increase to 20 or so in future updates.
New models often start out with high repair rates, and then improve as the manufacturer identifies and addresses common problems. MethodologyOnly successfully completed repairs are currently included in the analysis. Routine maintenance, most wear items, recalls, and problems fixed with just a reflash or warning light reset are not included.

| May | 2008 | 80000 | 0 | Check engine light has been on for 1.5 yrs. Had glow plug replaced at dealer a year ago-came back on in 3 days. Did nothing. New shop identified the faulty plug #1, cleaned the plugs and then #3 came on. They cleared the light. I am again doing nothing |
| Sep | 2008 | 85000 | 0 | I asked shop to perform diagnostic during routine maintainance. The glow plug is still the fault. They checked the plugs, fine. Cleared the light, but came back on in 2 days. Rear brake pads & Rotors |

| Jan | 2010 | 104700 | 250 | Glow plug fault still tripping check engine light. Car was getting harder & harder to start. Replaced the glow plug wiring harness. Seems to have worked. |
| Apr | 2010 | 110000 | 500 | Brake light switch - replaced twice by owner. Neither the generic nor the one from the dealer worked - the shop replaced again & all the bulbs too. Apparently, the switch was making them 'stay on' so they were burnt out. |
| May | 2010 | 110000 | 2500 | I could tell the transmission was starting to slip - from reverse to drive. No problems from 1st to 2nd, etc.... |

Checked the rear rotors and are probably nearing maximum wear limit. Replaced rear rotors and handbrake is back to normal height. Engine overheated after a 45-min freeway drive and while queued in traffic. The radiator fan was not running. Shorted the contacts to the temp sensor on the radiator to force the fan ON. Replaced the sensor the next day. |

| Feb | 2008 | 300 | Removed intake manifold to remove standard sludge buildup. The EGR and PCV empty into the intake manifold and create a tar-like substance that chokes the engine. This is common on ALL VW TDI engines through 2006. Must be done or engine runs VERY poorly | |
