Brand Reputation of the Volkswagen Jetta: Cons

It's been interesting to see the mixed reactions I get when people learn that I bought a VW. I'm known for my research-minded ways when it comes to big decisions, so I think the reliability (or lack thereof) reputation that Volkswagen has caused people to be surprised by my purchase. But for as many horror stories that I've read or heard, I've also heard from many owners who swear by and love their VWs and have had minor to no issues. Given how in love with my car I am after just one week...I get why VW owners love their cars (but, I'll admit, I still have my fingers crossed that I won't be plagued with too many quirks or issues).
2008 4dr Sedan 170-horsepower 2.5L I5
6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
VW/Audi has a reputation of poor reliability and expensive to service.
2007 4dr Sedan 150-horsepower 2.5L I5
6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
I'm a little worried about how it'll hold up, due to VW's reputation.
2006 4dr Sedan turbocharged 100hp 1.9L I4 Diesel
5-speed manual FWD
More work is needed to convince public that VW is a reliable brand.
2006 4dr Sedan 150-horsepower 2.5L I5
6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
VW gets a bad reputation for reliability and quality though they build an excellent vehicle in terms of safety, handling and fun to drive.
2006 4dr Sedan turbocharged 100hp 1.9L I4 Diesel
5-speed manual FWD
That people automatically assume that all VWs are unreliable just because they had problems with their cars in the late 90s/early 00s. The new Jetta and Rabbit are MUCH better than they used to be. The TDIs especially are very reliable.
2003 4dr Wagon turbocharged 90hp 1.9L I4 Diesel
5-speed manual FWD
Image of a good car, well built, good handling with lackluster dealer service leads to uninspiring owner experience for many.
2002 4dr Sedan turbocharged 90hp 1.9L I4 Diesel
5-speed manual FWD
Average car
