Comfy fuel-efficient Cute-Ute, easily tows trailer A member from Wisconsin, United States Best Reason to Buy the Toyota RAV4: Cargo capacity & towing I researched extensively for a fuel-efficient vehicle that could tow a 3500lbs trailer and have good cargo capacity for its size. Not too many options out there, but the V6 Rav4 meet these requirements better than others. It easily towed 3000lbs loads while still getting lower-20MPG at highway speeds(with the AC on). When not towing a trailer, I have occasionally seen calculated 27+ MPG at highway speeds for a tankful, altho 26MPG is more normal. Does this on REGULAR gas, unlike some other similar vehicles requiring a premium blend. Best Reason Not to Buy the Toyota RAV4: Materials & workmanship Interior has held up well, but there's way too many hard surfaces on dash & doors. But it's comparable to other value-priced Cute-Utes (under $30K) designed & marketed prior to 2009. Most auto manufacturers have focused on upgrading the interiors since the later 2000s, when they re-design their vehicles. RAV4 - very competent but check the controls A member from Maryland, United States Best Reason to Buy the Toyota RAV4: Powertrain performance The powertrain is quite smooth - 6speed trans shifts nicely whether jabbing it or in traffic or manually shifting. The manual shifting works ok but toyota assumes it is smarter than you and will override - and the indicator will not match the actual gear. Power is decent, even with AWD - seems like closer to 200 HP. Engine sound is smooth. Best Reason Not to Buy the Toyota RAV4: Audio & nav systems Car equipped with nav system. Touch screen not very sensitive and menus difficult; visibility not that great either. The Entune system requires the phone to connect via USB and have the app running locking down the phone - it will NOT work via bluetooth (seriously Toyota??), but BT-Audio works well (and pulls album cover photos from iPod list in my iPhone). Backup camera quality very good and grids are nice, although they don't swing with the steering like Nissan's system. Audio system sounds decent. Voice recognition, well, wouldn't recognize anything I attempted to command it. Admittedly, though, I don't have a lot of luck with these systems (the Honda system, menu driven, I have better success with). Creaks, rattles, squeaks and groans are plentiful in the interior. Road noise can be invasive at times. Very disappointing in a near 40k SUV. Ever feels wanting. Uses synthetic oil, so changes are at 10k mi intervals. Best Reason Not to Buy the Toyota RAV4: Price or payments A base RAV4 is quite inexpensive. Fully optioned, the price can balloon by a third.
