We purchased our Matrix NEW June of 2006, we now (21 Dec 2012) have 82,000 miles and I have monitored the mileage since we purchased the car. We get 24 in city driving and the VERY best we've got on a long freeway drive was 30mpg. Overall our mileage for the 80,000 miles is 27 which isn't great but is acceptable.

YearBody/PowertrainComment
2009 4dr Hatch 132-horsepower 1.8L I4
4-speed automatic FWD
good, but should be much better
2008 4dr Hatch 126-horsepower 1.8L I4
5-speed manual FWD
It only gets about 25mpg in a mixed cycle. Fit would get 28mpg or better in same driving.
2007 4dr Hatch 126-horsepower 1.8L I4
4-speed automatic FWD
expected the famous corolla frugality and efficiency - it has the same powertrain. we were totally disappointed. below freezing point, fuel consumption was scary: 17-20 l/100km. the best mileage we got was only 10 l/100 km.
2005 4dr Hatch 130-horsepower 1.8L I4
4-speed automatic FWD
Not even close to what is advertised
