Reliability and Durability of the Subaru Impreza / WRX / Outback Sport: Pros
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2012 4dr Hatch 148-horsepower 2.0L H4
6-speed shiftable CVT AWD
Ultimately it was Subaru's predicted reliability past 50,000 miles that had us make our final decision between this car and a Volkswagen (Jetta or Passat).
2011 4dr Hatch 170-horsepower 2.5L H4
4-speed shiftable automatic AWD
I have had zero issues with this car, it performs well for me day in and day out without fail. I love it and I am proud to say I own a Subaru.
2010 4dr Hatch turbocharged 265hp 2.5L H4
5-speed manual AWD
I have a lot of friends with Subarus who say nothing but good things. Word-of-mouth is a huge deciding factor here.
2009 4dr Hatch 170-horsepower 2.5L H4
5-speed manual AWD
No annoying rattles, squeaks, plastic wearing, etc. Well made and tight tolerances.
2009 4dr Hatch 170-horsepower 2.5L H4

No annoying squeaks, rattles, plastic wearing, etc.
2009 4dr Hatch 170-horsepower 2.5L H4
4-speed automatic AWD
No problems so far (I bought the Impreza). This is more based on word of mouth than experience - I know friends who have 200,000+ miles, so durability is certainly achievable in this car.
2008 4dr Hatch 170-horsepower 2.5L H4
5-speed manual AWD
Reputation is outstanding
2008 4dr Hatch turbocharged 305hp 2.5L H4

2008 4dr Hatch 170-horsepower 2.5L H4
4-speed shiftable automatic AWD
overall fantastic. rarely but sometimes if parked at the wrong angle(?) takes two trys to start. I think it has to do with the location of the fuel pump.
2008 4dr Hatch turbocharged 224hp 2.5L H4
5-speed manual AWD
Basic maintence is all that needs to be done for the most part. Subaru is an extremely reliable vehicle.
2007 4dr Sedan 173-horsepower 2.5L H4
4-speed automatic AWD
My brother had a Subaru with 320,000 kms and it was running perfectly until someone T-boned him and wrote it off. He used to belong to a Subaru club and told me stories of people who made it to 500,000 kms with their Subies.
2007 4dr Sedan 173-horsepower 2.5L H4
4-speed automatic AWD
Owned since Oct 2007- now Aug 2011 - very few issues, if any major at all. Only 1 recall for fuel tank fixed 1 day with MFG warranty. Practically superb durability for econ car. Only regular oil/gen maintenance needed Mobil 1 synthetic highly recommended
2007 4dr Sedan turbocharged 224hp 2.5L H4
5-speed manual AWD
I heard from lots of people (strangers & friends) of how durably the subaru engine is. On the other hand I also heard how unrealiable the transmissions can be. But I learned to realize that it all depends on the driver and the habits. My trans is great.
2006 4dr Sedan 173-horsepower 2.5L H4
5-speed manual AWD
no problems in over 2 years
2006 4dr Wagon turbocharged 230hp 2.5L H4

2004 4dr Sedan turbocharged 227hp 2.0L H4
4-speed automatic AWD
Always starts even in 30 below zero temps. The WRX has never left me stranded anywhere through 6 years and 170,000+ miles. Very confident with this vehicle and all long trips are taken with it. After 6 years and many highway miles, the vehicle still looks and feels practically new.

Reliability and Durability of the Subaru Impreza / WRX / Outback Sport: Cons
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2008 4dr Hatch turbocharged 305hp 2.5L H4
6-speed manual AWD
Sub had some issues with the 08 tune for the sti. They where prone to cracking the piston rings in sustained high rpm use. This is not a good thing !! They have since done a service recall to fix this issue.
