Reliability and Durability of the Saturn L-Series: Pros

Very reliable. I can count on one hand how many times the car needed to be in the shop for more than one day (other than for maintenance work). Earlier in my ownership, I did not take very good care. 6 years later, and with better maintenance on my part, it is still running strong. 10 years old, 164,000 miles, and no major mechanical repairs.

Engine and transmission have been highly reliable. Over 182,000 miles with only regular maintenance and one warranty to replace an ignition module. Tires have always worn well.

This has been the most expensive car I have ever owned to keep maintained, many things have broken that have never broken on any other car i have ever owned, this would be an annoyance except for the fact that parts are not available , no front struts, no door seals, I am told that I have oddball sized tires, an exhaust system that leaks ( I think from bad design and cheap materials) , I had the exhaust repaired because at 50,000 miles the only supply was the dealer at a cost of$1,300 for just the two front pipes, that would fail in 50,000 miles.

Incredibly poor reliability on my car. Two steering gears, three body control modules, a fuel pump, a thermostat, new axle seals. ALL of this happened prior to 50,000 miles. Cost me a lot of $$$ !! NOT impressed by this. Runs great...when it runs!

Overall, my car has been reliable. The problem is that some of theparts can be expensive and/or hard to find. Thankfully, I have been able to do some of the repairs and maintenance myself which has saved a lot of money.

First model year, suspension needs complete overhaul due to design flaws, not many part failures but if the timing belt breaks the car is garbage. Many little expensive issues.
