Mazda Mazda3 Fuel Economy: Pros
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2012 4dr Sedan 155-horsepower 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
This car does very well.. I drive mostly highway during the week, but a lot of rush hour driving means lots of stop and go. Even with that and the around town driving I do on the weekends, I am still averaging 38.1 MPG!
2012 4dr Hatch 155-horsepower 2.0L I4
6-speed manual FWD
Excellent fuel economy with the skyactiv 155hp engine
2012 4dr Sedan 155-horsepower 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic FWD
While reviews are mixed, the Skyactiv engine delivers as promised for me. With over 70% city/suburb driving, I've yet to average under 30mpg (odo/pump). Set the cruise control at 65-70 and > 40mpg is easy on a flat highway.
2011 4dr Sedan 148-horsepower 2.0L I4
5-speed shiftable automatic FWD
great gas mileage even for a lead-foot like myself.
2010 4dr Sedan 148-horsepower 2.0L I4
5-speed manual FWD
in mixed driving, averages under 7.0L/100km.
2010 4dr Hatch 167-horsepower 2.5L I4

Avg. 27mpg over the past two years.
2010 4dr Sedan 148-horsepower 2.0L I4

Better mpg then the Suzuki and very consistant.
2010 4dr Sedan 167-horsepower 2.5L I4
5-speed shiftable automatic FWD
I am currently getting 7.7L/100 km in the city and the vehicle only has 2000km on it.
2009 4dr Hatch 156-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed manual FWD
Its not class leading (like the Civic), but its not bad and for the performance completely acceptable.
2009 4dr Hatch turbocharged 263hp 2.3L I4
6-speed manual FWD
fuel economy sucks if you push it, big surprise. you can do high 20s if you are cruising at 65
2009 4dr Sedan 148-horsepower 2.0L I4
4-speed shiftable automatic FWD
32+ Hwy.
2009 4dr Hatch 156-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed manual FWD
I am a very spirited driver! Translation: I put my foot in it! I drive this car hard and it still gives me 480km/tank at $1.06/ltr. In Canada, that translates to a very conservative figure of $50 every 2-2.5 weeks.
2009 4dr Hatch 156-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed manual FWD
With a manual transmission it is common to get just over 30mpg without hypermiling.
2009 4dr Hatch turbocharged 263hp 2.3L I4
6-speed manual FWD
Very reasonable considering the available performance.
2008 4dr Hatch 156-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed manual FWD
I can get 27 mpmg in my daily city & highway commute with 5-spd manual and 2.3 engine.

Gets over 30 MPG
2008 4dr Hatch 156-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed shiftable automatic FWD
I traded in a 2006 Frontier with a 4.0L engine. Basically I drove the vehicle to and from work. The mazda 3 has good fuel economy compared to the truck.
2008 4dr Sedan 148-horsepower 2.0L I4
4-speed shiftable automatic FWD
carful driving has netted me 37 mpg highway.
2008 4dr Sedan 148-horsepower 2.0L I4
5-speed manual FWD
Based upon the new (2008) ratings, I expected to get well over the window-sticker 32 MPG highway rating. I have not been disappointed. I have gotten anywhere from 33 to 41 MPG on long road trips and have averaged right around 34 MPG in everyday driving.
2007 4dr Hatch 156-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed shiftable automatic FWD
I have a very heavy foot & I get much better mileage than I expected. 10km/litre

i always got 400 miles / tank :)
2007 4dr Sedan 148-horsepower 2.0L I4
5-speed manual FWD
I get around 28 city/ 34 highway MPG which is a lot better then my pig of a Nissan Maxima got! I feel given the overall performance and fun factor found here, the numbers are amazing.
2007 4dr Sedan 148-horsepower 2.0L I4
4-speed shiftable automatic FWD
good fuel economy for a car with a small amount of punch to it.
2006 4dr Hatch 160-horsepower 2.3L I4

you can drive it hard and still get great fuel economy
2006 4dr Hatch 160-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed shiftable automatic FWD
being a hatchback, I was able to take my wife and son and all of his college gear (pretty much a full load) and still get 31.5 MPG. Around town it typically gets 25 to 27 which is acceptable for the type of driving I do
2006 4dr Hatch 160-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed shiftable automatic FWD
My daily commute of 37 miles each way yields an impressive 32mpg on the highway.

2006 4dr Sedan 160-horsepower 2.3L I4

Given its performance, it has remarkable economy. When babied on the highway, I can get 38+mpg. In the city with a leadfoot, I get about 23. On average is 28-30 MPG.

Mazda Mazda3 Fuel Economy: Cons
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2011 4dr Sedan 167-horsepower 2.5L I4
5-speed shiftable automatic FWD
I have the Grand Touring model with the upped engine. Fuel economy is very poor compared to other cars in its class.
2011 4dr Hatch 167-horsepower 2.5L I4
5-speed shiftable automatic FWD
22 mpg (city) in a car this small is abysmal. 27 highway is worse.
2010 4dr Hatch 167-horsepower 2.5L I4
5-speed shiftable automatic FWD
Fuel economy in the VW GTI is slightly better than the Mazda 3, but it requires premium fuel. In the end, it's about even.
2010 4dr Sedan 167-horsepower 2.5L I4
5-speed shiftable automatic FWD
It sucks (literally). Slightly better than 25 mpg overall (I am driving one with a bigger engine). The 3 i variant would do better without much sacrafaces. But the rating is still below Civics and Corollas of the world.
2009 4dr Hatch turbocharged 263hp 2.3L I4
6-speed manual FWD
We average aprox 22MPG. Dont buy the Speed version of the Mazda 3 if your looking for fuel economy. Buy it if you have a smile pasted on your face when you drive.
2008 4dr Hatch 156-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed shiftable automatic FWD
only 22 MPG highway - with a lead foot. My RAV4 V6 gets the same MPG
2008 4dr Hatch turbocharged 263hp 2.3L I4
6-speed manual FWD
Runs premium, burns through fuel fairly quickly with a lot of spirited driving.
2008 4dr Hatch 156-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed shiftable automatic FWD
I wish it was better. I get about 23MPG in the city and 27 combined city/highway.
2008 4dr Hatch 156-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed manual FWD
10.5L avg for 100kms for the 2.3L 5 spd engine. Not as good as some of the competitors.
2008 4dr Hatch turbocharged 263hp 2.3L I4
6-speed manual FWD
Best case mileage is about as good as the worst case with the Civic. Between higher fuel and insurance costs, the total cost of ownership on the Speed3 made it not worth the extra money in spite of superior performance... to me
2008 4dr Hatch turbocharged 263hp 2.3L I4
6-speed manual FWD
<20 MPG average
2008 4dr Hatch 156-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed manual FWD
economy is average, but not the main reason to purchase.
2008 4dr Hatch turbocharged 263hp 2.3L I4
6-speed manual FWD
needs premium gas
2008 4dr Hatch turbocharged 263hp 2.3L I4
6-speed manual FWD
20mpg average for me, mostly city driving
2007 4dr Sedan 156-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed shiftable automatic FWD
Again, not bad. I average 26 mpg around my suburban town. Still not as good as the Civic.
2007 4dr Hatch 156-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed manual FWD
lower than others in the class, but, a price you pay for the added performance. I would not trade that, but, it would be nice if they could keep the performance and improve mileage. if mileage is a major issue for you, this might bug you.
2007 4dr Hatch 156-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed manual FWD
I have a very heavy foot and 90% of my driving is around town. I am getting about 24 mpg on average which is underwhelming. Having said that I only averaged 27 mpg on a 92 Civic with a 1.5L motor. I have a gift for getting poor mileage with any car.
2007 4dr Hatch turbocharged 263hp 2.3L I4
6-speed manual FWD
21 average gets expensive. But again, performance has its price.
2006 4dr Hatch 160-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed manual FWD
The city mpg is only 20 and that is driving conservatively.
2006 4dr Hatch 160-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed manual FWD
I typically get around 25 mpg, though it might be improving. Will see on an upcoming trip.
2006 4dr Hatch 160-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed manual FWD
No where close to what they claim in mileage
2006 4dr Hatch 160-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed manual FWD
It is on the low side; granted, the engine has a good amount of torque.
2006 4dr Hatch 160-horsepower 2.3L I4
5-speed manual FWD
Sub par for the segment driving under mixed city/highway conditions. Really tanks in the winter.
2005 4dr Sedan 160-horsepower 2.3L I4
4-speed shiftable automatic FWD
Not the best for a small sedan. Expect only 24-25 in the city, no better than 30mpg on the freeway. Geared for acceleration so the engine turns at high rpm in city traffic (nearly 2500 rpm), and on the freeway at 70mph the engine is over 3k rpm.
2004 4dr Sedan 160-horsepower 2.3L I4
4-speed shiftable automatic FWD
60/40 City/Highway yields only 25-27 MPG, not very impressive for a 4 cylinder although keep in mind it is a 2.3 liter engine.
