In 8 1/2 years of ownership, I've only had one repair; I replaced the alternator earlier this year at a cost of around $250. Best Reason Not to Buy the Lexus ES: Handling This car (which is based on the Toyota Camry) handles like a Camry. It lacks precision and has considerable side lean when cornering hard. A member from New Hampshire, United States Best Reason Not to Buy the Lexus ES: Driving position & visibility Because of the trunk being so high and the slope of the rear windshield you cannot even see behind you unless you use the camera. The B pillar is so wide and the roofline at the rear slope you have a very hard time seeing oncoming cars. I drove the ES from NY to Florida and back without difficulty. Best Reason Not to Buy the Lexus ES: Controls and instruments Very annoying and unintuitive controls, especially for the navigation system. Voice command system is far more distracting (and ANNOYING) to use while driving than conventional controls, most of which are locked out while the car is in motion. Torque converter thunks/bangs occasionally when driver lifts gas pedal just after up shift and then presses again.
