2009 Ford Ranger 4x4 with 4.0L - a real gas guzzle A member from Ontario, Canada Best Reason to Buy the Ford Ranger: Reliability & durability My 2009 Ford Ranger Sport 4x4 with 4.0L engine now has approx 27,000 km and has not required a single repair. Owners manual suggests 12,000 km oil change interval but I change it on my own at 6,000 and then take it to the dealer at the next 6,000. I provide my own synthetic oil. Best Reason Not to Buy the Ford Ranger: Fuel economy 2009 4.0L 4x4 with Auto is just HORRIBLE for fuel mileage - all these trucks with the 4.0L are! Although the Ford Ranger has an excellent and proven track record for reliability and the new vehicle pricing was very competitive, I could have purchased a larger more expensive truck with a V8 and more features and by this time I'm sure that I could have broken even if you consider how much the Ranger has cost me in additional fuel costs. Although I'm confident that this little Ranger will last for years, I'm afraid that I will be trading it earlier than I would have wanted to find something that is not such a gas guzzler. A member from Florida, United States Best Reason to Buy the Ford Ranger: Powertrain performance For the light weight of this vehicle, the engine performs admirably. With plenty of low end torque and a nice little HP powerband around 5000rpm, it works very well. Best Reason Not to Buy the Ford Ranger: Fuel economy Could be better. Right now getting a nudge over 20mpg each tank, which is somewhat expected but could still be better. Best Reason Not to Buy the Ford Ranger: Powertrain performance I wish Ford had offered the DOHC 3.0L Duratec engine (200HP) in the Ranger instead of the 4.0 SOHC engine. The 3.0L Vulcan engine really needs about 50 more HP. Best Reason Not to Buy the Ford Ranger: Fuel economy I would always like to get better gas mileage but considering mine is 4WD and has the larger engine, the gas mileage is not that bad. I would not want to give up power to get better gas mileage. I do feel Ford could improve on fuel economy. A member from New Jersey, United States Best Reason to Buy the Ford Ranger: Price or payments It was the least-expensive pickup I could find when I bought it in 2003. 14K and change for an XLT with standard cab, standard bed, four-cylinder engine, manual transmission, bedliner, carpeting, power windows and door locks, air and sliding rear window. Best Reason Not to Buy the Ford Ranger: Insurance & depreciation Insurance is very inexpensive, as replacement parts are cheap and plentiful. Depreciation is steep. After 7 years of ownership, trade-in value is about $3700. First Ranger I ended up selling after it rolled over the 300,000 mile mark.
