Ford Focus Reliability through December 31, 2012
General NotesModels and statistics marked with an asterisk (*) have very low sample sizes. These results, visible only to logged-in members, provide only a rough estimate of car reliability.Any result under 20 repair trips per 100 cars is likely a result of the small sample size, and should be expected to increase to 20 or so in future updates.
New models often start out with high repair rates, and then improve as the manufacturer identifies and addresses common problems. MethodologyOnly successfully completed repairs are currently included in the analysis. Routine maintenance, most wear items, recalls, and problems fixed with just a reflash or warning light reset are not included.

| Jul | 2010 | 125000 | 200 | Car stalls and will not idle after warmed up on a highway on a warm/hot day. May stall on deceleration, or at stop. Annoying and potentially dangerous. So far replace PCV valve, throttle body, throttle position sensor. |

| Jul | 2012 | 65000 | 1030 | Replaced alternator that was shot. Very difficult to access alternator where it is located below engine. Not designed for repairs/replacement by Ford engineers it would appear. All pads and rotors shot on car. All replaced. Door Ajar Warning Light kept coming on. Problem with electronic latch monitoring device in LH door. Mechanic turned bar on door trip latch with a pair of plyers where it was worn from use. Problem solved for time being Replaced burned out rear plate light bulbs on tail gate of car. Another design nightmare from Ford. Took about 45 minutes to get to bulbs to replace within body of tail gate. The sockets are poorly designed and prone to losing bulbs. |

| Ford Focus in Nova Scotia, Canada | ||||
| Month | Year | Odometer (in miles) |
Cost | Problem/Repair Description |
| May | 2010 | 68200 | First odometer entry | |
| Jun | 2010 | 70680 | 0 | Fuel pump replaced by dealer - service bulletin, no cost to me. But 2 wks earlier car stalled, wouldn't start. Had it towed to local garage, car started fine when it got there, charged me $157 for "diagnose problem & replace fuel filter". |
| Dec | 2010 | 86800 | 50 | Cruise stopped working - cost too much to repair on old car |
| Aug | 2011 | 103580 | 1451 | Parts replaced: rear sway bar link kit, rear trailing link (front rear control arm with 2 bushings), rear left spring perch, and various bolts. Parts cost $482 & labour cost $210 (total was $692 before sales tax). Front exhaust pipe was old and rusted - broke apart from flex pipe. Mechanic put in a small piece of pipe and welded it. A temporary fix - will have the flex pipe and front exhaust replaced next month. Severe rust along lower side panels (sills) - would not pass safety inspection. Sills replaced, body work done and new parts painted. $230 for sills, $400 for body work. |
| Sep | 2011 | 105400 | 550 | Front exhaust and flex pipe replaced (mechanic did a temporary welding fix during a previous visit), $400. Wheel bearing (front passenger side), $150. |
| Oct | 2011 | 108500 | 210 | Brake caliper (front passenger side) seized shut. Thermostat sticking open, according to mechanic (temp gauge often stays near cold after a lot of driving, even on hot days). No parts available locally - ordered in from another city. Car runs fine but gas mileage is really bad. New thermostat installed. Metal-on-metal squealing sound near alternator - mechanic removed alternator, sound was coming from a vibrating pulley underneath. Cleaned and lubed everything, noise not as bad, but still there - decided to live with it. |
| Mar | 2012 | 112840 | 0 | Clunking noise when go over bumps - diagnosed as sway bar bushings. Parts were ordered. |
| May | 2012 | 117460 | 300 | Sway bar bushings described in previous problem were replaced. Took longer than usual because bolts were rusted and things were seized up. Straps that hold gas tank in place had to be replaced (one completely broken and the other heading that way). Clunking noise from rear when going over bumps (separate from noise caused by sway bar bushings at the front). |
| Aug | 2012 | 121520 | 0 | Cam shaft broke. Was not worth fixing. Am keeping the car for parts. Bought another focus wagon (2003). |
