BMW X5 Reliability through December 31, 2012
General NotesModels and statistics marked with an asterisk (*) have very low sample sizes. These results, visible only to logged-in members, provide only a rough estimate of car reliability.Any result under 20 repair trips per 100 cars is likely a result of the small sample size, and should be expected to increase to 20 or so in future updates.
New models often start out with high repair rates, and then improve as the manufacturer identifies and addresses common problems. MethodologyOnly successfully completed repairs are currently included in the analysis. Routine maintenance, most wear items, recalls, and problems fixed with just a reflash or warning light reset are not included.

| May | 2010 | 23540 | 350 | During start up sometimes the vehicle can take 5-15 seconds to actually start after the key is turned. Attempt to solve, dealer ordered two relay wires to the starter that they will install at a later date. They stated fix is unlikely. Xenon headlights in auto on mode do not function properly, they flicker randomly. Dealer stated they could not duplicate the problem. When vehicle was returned to me I duplicated the problem in under 5 minutes. |
| Jan | 2011 | 35340 | 1550 | CEL started to flash on cold start up. Misfire codes, engine very rough, common problem. Ran okay for next 3 days until into shop. Not covered by extended warranty. Updated crankcase ventilation valve on left side per TSB. More update than complete "fix." Check engine light code p115a for low fuel or fuel delivery problem. Car was holding rpm at idle at 2000rpm and when in gear vehicle felt like the throttle was stuck down a bit. Check engine light came on and read code and cleared it. |
| Mar | 2011 | 37200 | 0 | Shudder sometimes when started. Crank case valve (oil separator) taken apart and checked for oil sludge build up, passenger side full of gunk after only 3 months, cleaned it out. Driver side no build up. Checked 3 days later and more build up. |
| Aug | 2011 | 44020 | 650 | Brakes were shuddering at 100km braking. Wear excessive on rotors yet pads 70%. Dealer replaced pads not rotors on recertification. Alignment done |
| Nov | 2011 | 47740 | 3000 | Spring and cap from oil pump came into oil filter housing. Noticed during oil change. Must replace whole oil pump. 3-4000$ job. Waiting on extended warranty to see if it's covered. Technical service bulletin on issue. No recall. BMW sucks. |
| Dec | 2011 | 48360 | 250 | CV boots worn bad in front right and left outer. Extended warranty should cover. Cost estimated 800-1000$, one day in shop. Update: learned no repair needed. |
| Feb | 2012 | 48360 | 150 | I did the accessory belts and tensioners myself at cost of about $150 because the tensioners were squeaking at any temp below 0 degrees C. It took about 35 minutes max. (dealer $600). I did not repair the crank case valve issue that KEPT coming up even after the update. Needed another update apparently. Did not repair the valvetronic rouge idle that was finished jan 2011. No symptoms aside from rough idle. |

| Feb | 2011 | 98000 | 650 | Driver's side door handle mechanism broke. Initially, we thought it was the Bowden cable, but it turned out to be the door handle itself. Replaced bad thermostat. We replaced the aux. air pump last year, but still got a code for it. Determined that aux. air pump relay was intermittent, so we replaced it. Left front CV boot was split, so we replaced both left and right. Windshield washer reservoir hose grommet is leaking. Shop didn't have part, so we'll attempt repair at a later date. |
| Nov | 2011 | 103000 | 270 | Washer fluid was leaking from one of the pumps, so it was replaced. Replaced both front turn signal assemblies, as cannot replace burned out bulbs separately. |

| Nov | 2010 | 75640 | 1400 | Brought in for check of non working ac. They put in a colored liquid to detect if there was a leak. At the same time, dealer found a leaking seal on transmission and the strap belt had to be replaced ,steering hose to be changed....wow! Dealer had told me that ac motor was to be changed. Car only has 122km (70k miles)! Cost of ac motor: $1400 plus installation. What a joke! Every time I bring in for oil change, it costs me over $1000 on various stupid little things..... |
| Dec | 2011 | 79360 | 0 | Fricken BMW, we pay such a high price for German Engineering and my car with only 127,000 km (79000miles) and the AC compressor dies out, and I live in Montreal, where we only use it like 5 mths a year! Parts: Dealer $1300; ebay new $385 The odometer shows 999999km ? What the hell! Shit box BMW's. I thought I was gonna have no problems with these cars. I am really sorry for having bought this vehicle. I should have gone with my first instinct the GMC yukon denali. :-( |
